What 3 Things Define a Great Personal Trainer?

I put this question to La Crescenta and Los Angeles personal trainer and exercise physiologist, Rudi Marashlian. He has over 30 years professional experience and has dedicated his life and career to helping people discover their fitter, stronger selves.

Here’s what he had to say about what defines a great personal trainer:

So, a great personal trainer would be someone who has a good balance between three things, three simple things:
theory
practical
and obviously, getting results.

The Theory-heavy Fitness Pros – Are They Enough?

You can get some people who are very heavy with theory, they may have a degree, double degrees, and all that, which is great, but they haven’t ever really worked in the field. Maybe they have lectured at colleges and universities, maybe they write books, maybe they engage in scientific study. They don’t have much practical real-life, in-the-field experience.

The Hands-on Personal Trainer – Who Needs More Fitness Education Anyway?

On the other hand, there are people who maybe have a lot of practical, hands-on experience, but have just done a basic weekend fitness personal trainer course. That’s still okay, but they’re going to miss out on depth of understanding of theory, basic anatomy, physiology, et cetera.

Fitness Results – Are They For Real?

And then again, with both of these cases, what kind of results have they been able to achieve, and what kind of people have they worked with? Are their results short-term or long-term?

So answering it a little more, I’d want to see someone with at least 10,000 hours plus of  face to face (one-on-one) or group training. I mean, how else do you become a professional? Part of it will be how much they have learned, how much they have applied, and, of course, what kinds of results have they got?

It’s pretty simple.
